What are YAML and JSON?

YAML (YAML Ain't Markup Language)

YAML is a human-readable data serialization format widely used for configuration files and data exchange. It uses indentation to represent structure, making it clean and intuitive for manual editing.

YAML Example

user:
  name: John Doe
  age: 30
  skills:
    - Python
    - JavaScript
  active: true

JSON (JavaScript Object Notation)

JSON is a lightweight data interchange format that is easy for humans to read and write, and easy for machines to parse and generate. It's one of the most common formats for Web APIs and configuration files.

JSON Example

{
  "user": {
    "name": "John Doe",
    "age": 30,
    "skills": ["Python", "JavaScript"],
    "active": true
  }
}

How It Works

This tool uses the js-yaml library to perform conversions in your browser:

Use Cases

⚙️ DevOps Configuration

Convert Docker Compose, Kubernetes YAML configs to JSON for programmatic processing and API calls.

📦 Data Migration

Quickly convert formats when migrating configuration data between different systems.

🔧 CI/CD Workflows

Convert GitHub Actions, GitLab CI YAML configs to JSON for script automation.

📝 Config Editing

Convert complex JSON configs to YAML for easier editing with clean syntax, then convert back.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between YAML and JSON?
YAML is more human-friendly for reading and editing, using indentation for hierarchy with clean syntax. JSON is more machine-friendly with braces and brackets and strict formatting. YAML supports comments and complex data types, while JSON doesn't support comments but offers faster parsing.
Is my data uploaded to a server during conversion?
No. All conversion operations are performed locally in your browser using pure JavaScript. Your data is never sent to any server, ensuring complete privacy and security.
What YAML features are supported?
Supports most YAML 1.2 features including: mappings (objects), sequences (arrays), scalars (strings, numbers, booleans), multi-line strings, anchors and aliases. Comments are lost during conversion.
What if conversion fails?
If conversion fails, the tool displays specific error messages. Common causes include: syntax errors (incorrect indentation, mismatched quotes), unescaped special characters, and incompatible data types. Check and fix your input based on the error message.
Are YAML comments preserved?
No. JSON format doesn't support comments, so YAML comments are lost when converting to JSON. If you need to preserve comments, back them up separately before conversion.
Can it handle large files?
Yes, but limited by browser memory. Typically, processing config files of a few MB is fine. Very large files (>10MB) may cause page lag. For massive files, consider using command-line tools.
Does it support YAML anchors and aliases?
Yes. YAML anchors (&) and aliases (*) are automatically expanded into complete data structures when converting to JSON. When converting back to YAML, anchors are not recreated—full data is output instead.
How are multi-document YAML files handled?
YAML supports multiple documents in one file using --- separators. This tool converts multi-document YAML into a JSON array where each element corresponds to one document. Single-document YAML converts to a single JSON object.
